Newton OBSERVATIONS OF THE SPIRAL GALAXY M 74 ( NGC
The face-on spiral galaxy M 74 (NGC 628) was observed by XMM-Newton on 2002 February 2. In total, 21 sources are found in the inner 5 from the nucleus (after rejection of a few sources associated to foreground stars). Hardness ratios suggest that about half of them belong to the galaxy. The higher-luminosity end of the luminosity function is fitted by a power-law of slope −0.8. This can be inte...
متن کاملChandra observations of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6503
We have observed the nearby spiral galaxy NGC6503 using Chandra. Seven discrete sources associated with the galaxy have been found, one of them coincident with its Liner-starburst nucleus. One of the sources corresponds to a ULX with Lx ∼ 10 39 ergs s. Previous ROSAT observations of the galaxy show that this source has varied by at least a factor 3 in the last 6 years. No evidence is found for ...
متن کاملFUSE observations of the Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxy Mrk 59
New FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the nearby metal-deficient (Z⊙/8) cometary Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxy Markarian (Mrk) 59 is discussed. The data are used to investigate element abundances in its interstellar medium. The H i absorption lines are characterized by narrow cores which are interstellar in origin and by broad wings which are stellar in origin. The mean interstellar H i column dens...
متن کاملAn extended dust disk in a spiral galaxy; An occulting galaxy pair in ANGST
We present an analysis of an occulting galaxy pair, serendipitously discovered in ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury (ANGST) observations of NGC 253 taken with Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Survey in F475W , F606W and F814W (SDSS−g, broad V and I). The foreground disk system (at z ≤ 0.06) shows a dusty disk much more extended than the starlight, with spiral lanes seen in extinctio...
متن کاملObservations of Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 4038 / 9
We present the results of new radio interferometer H i line observations for the merging galaxy pair NGC 4038/9 (‘The Antennae’), obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The results improve substantially on those of van der Hulst (1979) and show in detail the two merging galactic disks and the two tidal tails produced by their interaction. The small edge-on spiral dwarf galaxy ESO...
